Get to Know the People of GXS

Just the Right Talent in Just the Right Places

As a global services company, GXS has nearly 2,000 employees working around the world. They are some of the most knowledgeable and skilled individuals in B2B e-commerce with thousands of years’ experience collectively in the industry. As a services company, many of our employees do not get the opportunity to meet our customers in person—even though they may interact with them via phone or online every day. We’d like to take this opportunity to introduce you to some of the employees of GXS around the world. They are individuals with fascinating interests, skills and hobbies. In the future, we will add new and different employees to this page, but for now, we’d like to introduce you to Helcio, Mark, Jeff and Leo.

Jeff Barton, Senior Enterprise Architect

Jeff Barton

Jeff Barton has an important role as Chief Architect for GXS Trading Grid, GXS’s on-demand B2B integration services platform. Based in GXS’s Gaithersburg, Maryland headquarters office, Jeff oversees the architectural design and implementation of the platform and service capabilities that comprise GXS Trading Grid. Mr. Barton also provides input for strategic technology decisions as they relate to present and future GXS product and service development.

Jeff has been with GXS for 10 years and has held several leadership positions within the company with respect to software and service architecture and development. Jeff has not always been in business technology though. In a previous career path, Jeff was a molecular biologist at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center where he was involved in research associated with Down’s Syndrome and Alcoholic Liver Disease. Jeff reached the level of Assistant Professor of Medicine before leaving the scientific arena in favor of software design and development. Accordingly, Jeff holds a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from North Carolina State University and a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology from Louisiana State University.

When Jeff is not driving innovation at GXS, he is busy raising three children—15 year old boy/girl twins and a 13-year-old son. A Louisiana native, Jeff is truly a “gumbo” of knowledge and expertise.

Helcio Beninatto, Vice President of GXS Brazil

Helcio Beninatto

A native Brazilian, Helcio Beninatto is head of GXS Brazil. Helcio is great to have around GXS because not only is he a skilled and experienced IT executive, but he also speaks five languages—Portuguese, English, Spanish, French and Italian. Having lived in eight different countries before he was 16 years old, it’s no surprise that Helcio is such a skilled linguist. Based in Sao Paolo, Helcio is relatively new to GXS, having joined the company in July 2009 from Fair Isaac where he was vice president and managing director for Latin America. Helcio is also a 20-year veteran of global technology services provider, Electronic Data Systems (EDS), where he held leadership positions in business development, operations, sales and product strategy.

Prior to EDS, Helcio worked for a variety of technology companies including Siscon Consultoria de Sistemas, where he was responsible for the development and implementation of a nationwide loan information management system for Banco Nacional de Habitacao. Helcio has a master’s degree in Information Technology from Pontifícia Universidade Católica in Rio de Janeiro and is currently attending Executive Education at Harvard Business School.

When Helcio is not working hard at GXS, he is indulging his love of sports cars and motorcycles. In fact, on weekends, Helcio often takes motorcycle trips with friends on which they ride up to 400 miles a day. Of course, with his two children already grown, Helcio has less of a need to hurry home these days. So if you find yourself on Brazilian highway on a Saturday, you never know, that could be Helcio under the helmet behind you.

Mark Morley, Director of Automotive Industry Marketing

Mark Morley

Mark Morley is another individual you are likely to find on the highway—only in the UK, not Brazil. As director of automotive industry marketing, Mark is a self-professed car junkie and a former member of the McLaren Formula One racing team in the UK. Not surprisingly then, Mark leads GXS’s strategy in the automotive and industrial manufacturing sectors. In this role, Mark defines the go-to-market strategy for GXS’s B2B e-commerce and integration solutions within these sectors.

Mark works closely with automotive organizations and standards-bodies such as the American Industry Action Group (AIAG) and ODETTE in Europe. He has participated in a number of projects associated with improving the B2B capabilities of companies in China and developed best practice guidelines for the management of long distance supply chains. Mark also frequently speaks about improving the efficiency of automotive supply chains and strategies for managing offshore manufacturing operations.

Prior to joining GXS, Mark worked for the National B2B Centre in the UK and also spent 13 years with PTC, a provider of product lifecycle management software solutions. Mark has a Master‘s of Science from Cranfield University and a Master’s of Business Administration (MBA) from Warwick Business School. Although Mark is more focused on terrestrial transportation these days, Mark’s MBA dissertation was a business plan for a new sub-orbital space tourism company.

On a personal level, Mark’s knowledge of Computer Aided Design software has helped him to create numerous designs for a dream house on the coast he hopes to build one day. Until that day comes, he can be found carefully washing and maintaining his Audi or improving his current home. Mark has a variety of DIY skills including painting, wiring, decorating and gardening. Mark’s blog, Driving B2B, can be found at http://blogs.gxs.com/morleym.

Tami Morrison-Ruben, Vice President Customer Support

Tami Morrison-Ruben

Tami Morrison serves as the Vice President of Customer Support at the new GXS. Having held a multi-faceted role at Inovis, Tami came to GXS with strong leadership experience in IT and Support. At Inovis, Tami was “officially” the Vice President of Enterprise IT and Services, where she had responsibility for Customer Support and Solution Center Services, as well as the internal operations of Vendor Management, Enterprise Applications, End User Services, Network, Telecom, Technical Communications, and Educational Services. “Unofficially” as mentor and visionary, she cultivated several teams of very bright, driven individuals who consistently achieved fruitful collaboration with customers and internal Inovis counterparts.

Her secret for leading successful teams? As an avid professional baseball fan (GO Braves!), she takes her queues from pro-ball coaches and managers: deliver clear direction, accountability, a sense of urgency and most importantly; make sure every player knows they make a difference. GXS and its customers benefit from Tami’s approach and her teams’ creativity and eagerness to win every day.

Tami’s background is as varied as the teams she manages. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications from the University of Idaho and her career journey has taken her from radio to beverage distribution. Previously she managed wireless cable systems for Sprint, was General Manager with Micron Internet Services, and Vice President of Sales for Interland Web Hosting, before finally joining Inovis, a GXS company, six years ago. And what else could she add to her CV? She and husband Eric stay busy with their two children, Elizabeth and Raymond, and their three-year-old grandson, Jayson. Together, the family enjoys the company of their four Labrador Retrievers and five cats, not to mention the 60+ dogs they have fostered throughout the years through the Lab rescue program—more than 60 lives saved, one at a time. And in her spare time, Tami keeps busy as a member of Women in Technology, the Technical Association of Georgia (TAG), and Gamma Phi Beta Sorority.

David Swanlaw, Senior Vice President of Operations

David Swanlaw

In his 21 years with Inovis, a GXS company, David Swanlaw has trekked through operations management with as much gusto as his explorations of our National Parks. Now serving as the GXS Senior Vice President of Operations, he brings more than 28 years experience in the hosted services business. His teams have responsibility for a broad area—maybe not as vast as the parks David explores—but still a vital heartbeat for GXS. They manage on-boarding and ongoing support of all customers who use Inovis software and solutions as well as delivery of network, computing resources, and application support in all GXS Inovis data centers and server rooms. This is no small undertaking, since the responsibility includes Inovis’s Tier 4 production facilities.

According to David, he sometimes uses the “keep your eye on the ball” skill he developed throughout his career when he’s on the golf course— looking for the ball. With a degree in Computer Science from the College of Marin, his early career included managing development and technical support at the Pacific Stock Exchange, where he was responsible for options trading systems. His journey has also led him through operations at a small retail goods import company and service in the United States Navy.

David and wife Elizabeth share a passion for exploring the National Parks and their adventures have taken them through the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Glacier National on the Canadian side, Waterton National, Death Valley and Yosemite. With a budding interest in photography, David plans to “develop” that skill on his next National Park trip—hopefully Mt. Rainier. The Swanlaw family includes four children and the entire clan resides in California.

Leo Yeung, Director of Solutions Consulting, Asia Pacific

Leo Yeung

Leo Yeung has been with GXS for more than 12 years and is currently the director of Solution Consulting for Asia Pacific, based in GXS’s Hong Kong office. In this role, Leo is responsible for managing GXS’s best-in-class supply chain integration solutions for major corporations in manufacturing, retail, automotive, financial services and logistics. Previously, Leo worked in Business Consulting, Marketing and Product Management at GXS. Before joining GXS, Leo worked in the logistics area for many years serving major transportation companies including Norasia Lines and Orient Overseas Container Lines.

A Hong Kong native, Leo’s educational background has taken him all over the world. He first earned a Bachelor’s in Business Administration from Hong Kong Baptist University followed by a Master’s in International Management from Baylor University in the United States and, finally, a Master’s of Science in Information Technology Management from Staffordshire University in the United Kingdom. Leo is a true expert in B2B e-commerce and, in fact, in 2008, he published a book in Traditional Chinese on the subject. Keeping up the scope of languages supported by GXS, Leo is fluent in English, Mandarin and Cantonese.

When he is not traveling throughout Asia to meet with customers—which is often—Leo is a skilled practitioner of martial arts. He is certified in Taekwondo instruction by the Hong Kong Taekwondo Association and has recently signed on his first student: his four-year-old son.
